PROJECTS COMPLETED
In the '90's the group commissioned a village development plan for Sixmilebridge Tidy Towns. Josephine Plattenberg, the designer, drew up a five-year plan, incorporating tree, shrub and flower planting, the upgrading of buildings and introduction of more colour in the village.
Over the years the plan has been implemented. Many hundreds of trees and shrubs have been planted. Park benches and litter bins have been erected, and stone walls were built under the direction of the local engineer. After years of lobbying the Council, undergrounding of cables was also completed in Sixmilebridge centre.
Recommendations were made by the Tidy Towns committee to the County Council and building contractors to introduce a variety of colours in the painting of new housing estates.
The group also worked closely with the Credit Union and the Sixmlebridge Library committees in the reconstruction of the old Garda Station and Church of Ireland, both of which had fallen into disrepair.
More recently, the committee produced a Directory of Services for the area, which includes business listings, voluntary organisations, and a list of suggested walks around the area. These were distributed to each household in the parish.
The committe were also involved with other projects to include the upgrading of the lighting system in the village centre. The project is ongoing and we are continuing to consult with Clare Co. Council.
In recent years, we have completed a project on the Senior Citizens houses, with the exterior of the houses being painted, and the front gardens landscaped. The rear gardens were also cleared. This project was completed with the help of the HSE and Clare County council.
We also erected a display sign near the Greyhound Pub showing the wildlife indigenous to the area. (see Achievements page). This project was grant aided by the Heritage Council and Clare County Council.
We continue to liaise with the local primary school's Green School committee, with representation on that committee.
Last year, we erected a map of the area in the village square. On the reverse side, there is a tribute to the late Dr Brendan O'Regan. We would like to acknowledge, with thanks, the support of Clare County Council and Shannon Development in this project.
